Hurricane Melissa is projected to escalate to a uncommon highest-level hurricane as it shifts towards the Caribbean island, bringing deadly flash flooding and mudslides.

The cyclone, which had winds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is anticipated to hit the coast by midweek, based on data from weather experts.

Advisories of power cuts and damage to infrastructure have been issued as Melissa generates up to 76cm of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as thirteen feet above normal levels. "Take cover without delay," inhabitants have been urged.

The cyclone is the thirteenth hurricane in the ongoing Atlantic storm period, which usually concludes in November.

Highest-Level Hurricane Threat

A highest-level hurricane is the most intense classification, with winds of at least 157mph.

Although this storm is expected to reduce in intensity to a Category 4 cyclone before arriving at Jamaica, authorities said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon reaching the coast, and that the hurricane will be "at least that intensity" when it impacts the country.

With tropical storm-level wind and rainfall already expected ahead of it passes over central Jamaica - possibly even the capital, Kingston - warnings emphasize that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"Several days of damaging winds and torrential rain are underway and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening sudden floods and numerous rock slides," counseled climate experts.

The country's head of government the statesman commented: "I know that there are numerous residents who are anxious, who are extremely apprehensive, and with good reason: worry is natural.

"Yet the best way to handle worry and any apprehension and worry is to be prepared."

Inhabitants are being advised to protect their properties with protective bags and wooden boards, and to accumulate necessary supplies.

Advisories are also in effect for areas in the neighboring country including the main city, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and the eastern part of Cuba, where Melissa is anticipated to bring analogous consequences by the midweek period.

Rock slides already being caused by the hurricane have already killed two in the country, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Expected Trajectory

This weather system is forecast to move across the island nation by the middle of the week before traveling via the Antillas Mayores and emerging into the Atlantic.

By the moment it makes contact with Cuba, it is predicted to have weakened to a third-level cyclone.
